Rugosa Rose Trellis Window

This project is a 36" X 20" window panel.  It will be placed in the middle pane of three panes in our master bath.  The pattern was reduced down from one sold by Paned Expressions Studios.  Two copies of the pattern were printed on multiple sheets of letter size paper and taped together to form the full window.  One copy was in black and white and was taped to a plywood base to become the "cartoon".  The cartoon provides the roadmap for assembling the approximately 620 glass pieces.  The other copy was printed in color and covered with a heavy gauge adhesive vinyl sheet.  It was then cut apart to provide the color coded pattern pieces for each piece of glass in the window.  Follow the progress of this construction in the pictures below.  The two side panels were built and added afterwards.  The center panel was begun in March 2015 and completed in July 2015.  The final panel of the trio was completed in February of 2016.

The cartoon is fastened to a plywood base.
The dark wood strips in the corners and sides assure that the window will be square.
The layout of this project takes up a lot of studio space.
The pattern pieces are cut out as needed as the construction progresses.
The glass cutting area. A vertical diamond grinder, a horizontal diamond grinder and a diamond glass saw are also used in the cutting and fitting process.
Work progresses as the top row of the trellis is glassed in.
The window pieces are nearly finished at this point.
Getting close to the next phase - cleanup and framing.
All work is merely tack soldered on the topside. After the window is completely filled in it will be finished soldered on both front and back.
Here is the window area prior to the panel installation.
Here is the window area with the panel installed.
The two side lights are obvious candidates for future projects.
There are approximately 620 pieces of glass in this panel.
The solder lines have been given a copper patina chemical treatment.
Center panel detail.
The finished project - Feb. 2016.
